These old fashioned chocolate bars, called Chocolate Indians on the original handwritten recipe, were baked in a moderate oven and topped with a simple cocoa frosting spread over the bars while still warm. Recipes like this were common in mid-century kitchens, when easy chocolate desserts made from pantry staples were served fresh the same day for family suppers, school lunches, and afternoon coffee breaks.
