Apple Sauce Cake is one of those old recipe-box recipes that assumes the cook already knows what to do. Applesauce, cinnamon, cloves and fruit make up the cake, with raisins suggested and dates, pineapple or cherries offered as possibilities. No oven temperature, no baking time, no directions at all — just the ingredients and the confidence that somebody in that kitchen knew the rest.

1 1/2 cups sugar (use 1/4 cup less if sauce is sweetened)
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 cups flour (sifted)
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1 cup chopped seeded raisins or fruit as desired (dates, pineapple, cherries, etc.)
