Cressa’s Cherry Winks are crisp little cookies packed with pecans, dates and maraschino cherries, then rolled in crushed cornflakes before baking. Dated April 28, 1970, this handwritten recipe makes a generous batch of about five dozen cookies.
2 1/4 c. sifted Pillsbury Best enriched flour
1 tsp. double-acting baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 c shortening
1 c sugar
2 eggs
3 Tbs milk
1 t. vanilla
1 c pecans
1 c dates
1/3 c maraschino cherries
2 1/2 c. cornflakes, crushed
Sift together dry ingredients.
Combine shortening & sugar,
cream well.
Add eggs, milk, vanilla.
Blend in dry ingredients; mix well.
Add pecans, dates, cherries.
Mix well.
Shape into balls using a level tablespoon of
dough for each cookie.
Roll each ball of dough in cornflakes.
Place on greased baking sheet.
Top each cookie with 1/4 maraschino cherry.
Bake in moderate oven (375°F.)
10 to 12 minutes.
Do not stack or store until cool.
Yield: about 5 doz. cookies.
